YTers,
Family member has a 135 diesel and has a chance to trade for a 135 gas + boot. He never did care for diesels that much, and the tractor just doesn't see much use. Any good or bad experiences with the gas engine? All comments appreciated.
Bill

Hey Bill,
I have a 70 model 135 with the 4 cyl. gas motor in it and it has served me well, its sits out in the yard when not working surrounded by my 4230,4430, and 3020 Deere's which are all diesels and doesn't seem to mind. I would prefer to have a diesel so I could run all one fuel type but this little gas burner has the heart of a diesel for sure. Does seem to go through more fuel than a diesel would of the same size. I have run my 469 or 488 haybine with it, pulled my rakes, my square baler, pasture conditioner and more with it without any problems. Its basically going to depend on what yall want to do and how much it will be worked. I'm partial to green paint and as such mine will probably be traded before too long on a diesel Deere but till then this one will have its place!

I have both a diesel (3 cyc Perkins) and gas (4 cyc Cont.) MF 135 and I prefer the diesel, seems as if I can bushhog with it all afternoon and it'll burn only half a tank while the gas tractor will will suck up much more fuel. The diesel seems to me to also run better under heavy load. Around here (SW Ohio) I think diesels sell for more. One little thing I really like about the diesel, it has been converted to use a spin on oil filter. The gas one has a filter element that mounted in a upside down can that makes a mess whenever I go to change it. Trading down to a gas tractor wouldn't make sense to me.

My experiance with gas engine Fergusons has always been good. Most people like them because they are little simplier to work on than diesels are, and parts are cheaper. I have both gas and diesel both have thier advantages and disadvantges it does not matter to me which I work on I just love the fergusons period. Seems Northern tractor owners have more problems with cracked blocks than we do here in the South. I have several and work each one at different times, I tend to run my gas tractor more than the diesel even though it has PS and a little more power. I do a couple of restortations a year and the older gas engines tractors seem to be more coveted than the diesels. I have both but if I had to choose just one I'd go with the gas model.

its all in what you like, I love em all...
just my opnion
best wishes

IMHO Id stick with the diesel.

Is it the 3 cylinder diesel?

Ive always heard that the gas is not very reliable, whereas the 3cyl diesel certainly is. If its the 4 cylinder diesel, then it just depends what condition.

Yes, it is the 3 cylinder diesel. And from what I understand, it is a 3 cylinder gas that they are looking at. I always thought that the gas engines were 4 cylinders, but then I'm a Farmall guy!
Thanks,
Bill

If it is a 3-cyl Perkins gas I would avoid it unless the tractor is in much better overall shape than the one they have. The 4-cyl gas Continentals are good engines and if you want a gas I would only go with one of those. The 3-cyl gas seemed to use more fuel than the Continental and as someone else said it had less low end torque. I believe MF actually switched back to the 4-cyl gas engines after trying the 3-cyls for a while.

Early 135s had Continental Z-145 4 cyl. engines. Late 135s had Perkins 152ci. 3 cyl. engines. All 135 diesels in the U.S. had Perkins 152 3 cyl. engines.

Thanks for the reply.
The diesels seem to be more popular around here. The one that might be traded just started leaking from the injector pump. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet but they told me they can't see where it is coming from. Might trade it off the way it is.
Thanks,
Bill

The Perkins 3cyl diesel engine is a great engine. The converted Perkins (to gas) engine has little low end torque compared to the 4cyl gas Contential engine. I would keep the diesel MF135 and have the pump repaired, because it will outperform either gas engine.
