Hi all,

This is all I can read of my ident number and it's spaced just like that. There can't be any numbers after the 5 as there's not enough space on the ID plate. There could be a number or two in front of the 1. What might they be? It's a 4 cyl diesel with 3 speed hi/lo. What does the SDM mean?

Kind Regards
Michael Oakes

Hi Michael If you get a piece of paper and place it over the number and rub a pencil over it, it may be readable, you can remove the plate and try it on the reverse as well, new plates are available and can be stamped with your number if you find it
As for the letters;
S = Chassis Normal
D = Engine Diesel Standard 23C
M = Clutch Dual

Sounds like you have a FE 35
Look on the right hand side (as you sit on it) of the engine and find the core bungs (round discs that come out if the engine block freezes) and to the left you will see the casting numbers of the engines date of casting they will read for example 15.6.58 this mean the engine was cast on the 15 day of June 1958, also the same side on the clutch housing are two numbers i.e. 58.6 these may be upside down.
I have a 1957 FE 35 so I know were to look! Of course this is taking that the engine was made by the STANDARD MOTOR CO, Coventry England
The engine serial number is on the same side high up very near the fuel tank to the front of the engine, if you get that let me have those and I will try to date it from that.

The SDM is the build code for the tractor. I can't find my source telling me exactly what these mean but I also have an SDM, and they stand for Standard diesel engine, dual clutch and deluxe model (tractor meter and deluxe type seat). I'm not sure which letter means what, I'm sure someone will add to this with the exact detail. Other letters were used to indicate things such as different engines, narrow / vineyard chassis and single clutch. Some information is available from www.fofh.co.uk

There is a date cast into the centre housing near the PTO side cover on RHS, this should give you an accurate enough date to guess the first two numbers. If you do this and are a member of FOFH you can get an authentification letter for that number so that it can be road registered.

Thanks again guys,

I'll check the numbers.

A dual stage clutch??. The PTO shaft doesn't stop spinning evenm with the clutch pedal completely depressed although I haven't put an implement on it yet. Maybe the plate is binding on the input shaft. I have pics if anyone's interested.

Thanks again.
