Need To Replace the missing gear shift knob on my MH 20. Were these orginally threaded onto the shaft. The gear stick appears not to be threaded or perhaps there is residue metal left by the orginal knob assembly covering the threads???
Presently hard to tell as the gear shift is a bit rusty & may or may not be one piece!!
Any suggestions Thanks

Thanks Ray-s & TO35 for your assistance. I tried appling more pressure with vice grips after knowing it was threaded. Initially I thought I might damage the transmission gearshift assembly if too much presure was applied, but the little extra was enough to remove it.
The new one is on , but will come off to continue cleaning & painting.
The next job will be removing the steering wheel & steering box for rebuild. Thanks again

Hi Bill , We just put a new knob on our Pony. The top of the shifter had a knurled sleeve threaded on to the shaft. That is the threaded insert from the old knob. We got it off with good vicegrips. Did not damage the threads and the new knob threaded right on. Ray-s

They can be tough to remove, try something easy like vise grips first. If that does not get it off, you may have to cut it with a die grinder , then chase the threads, I have had to cut the shifter shaft off and rethread it.

best wishes
