A few months ago, I purchased a Massey Ferguson MF 35 gas tractor. It runs great and is a work horse. The tach (tractormeter) was not working. I checked it out and discovered that it was not hooked up. When I found out that the tach connected to the generator, I was disappointed because mine was converted to a Delco Remey alternator years ago. I would like to convert it back. Where can I get a generator with the tach port for my tractor? Also, the serial number for the tractor is: UGM655001590. Can anyone tell me the year or this tractor? Horsepower? Thanks in advance.

Barry,
You can still buy the drive portion for the generator from a dealer, but,it ain't cheap,i checked into it once.Every now and then a complete generator appears on ebay. The nice part about them is the built in hour meter.I'm still looking for one myself. Jerry,

Hi, Barry. I have a 35 gas too. Your engine is the Continental Z134. It's 134 cubic inches, and 34 horepower at about 1800 rpm according to the manual. Look on the side of the block and the letters Z134 should be cast into it. As for the tach, you can't connect the cable to the alternator as you know, but you could just buy a modern style tach from a catalogue store like Jeg's or Summit Racing, or even an auto parts store. I believe they can get Stewart Warner tachs with low rpm ranges for ag/industrial equipment, that connect electrically. The alternator would be a much better choice than an old fashioned generator with brushes and commutators that wear out and get dirty. Just run the engine at 2000 rpm for the right PTO speed. But if you want the genny, try a tractor junkyard, or search the parts suppliers for rebuilts. I checked the serial # on the serial # icon at the left but it didn't fit. Did you get it from the metal tag under the steering wheel? Anyway, they were made from 1960-1964 unless it's a Ferguson TO35 made from 1954 -57 painted gray, 58-59 painted red. It didn't fit there either. Or is it an FE35 from Europe? Check the serial # tag to see where it's made. Where are you at? Regards.
