I just purchased a Massey 245. Hopefully this will be my new "hay" tractor. In looking over this site I'm not finding anything on the 245. Folks around here indicate it's a good tractor and judging from the amount of them I see they are or there was one heck of a dealer around in the mid 70's. Has anyone out there got an opinion on the 245, good or bad?

I love mine, Very dependable, starts even in the Northern NY winters. The exhaust can be a little overwhelming when changing implements. Besides that, strong tractor.

Oh, mine's a diesel.

I had my fuel pump rebuilt, and it solved the smoking problem. If you decide to get it rebuilt, check around for prices. I had mine done at the Internetional Dealorship for half the price of the Massey Dealor.

I agree with Tommy the MF245 was the best tractor ever built in the 40HP range in my opinion. The Orchard model MF245 tractors did have wet disc brakes.

Chief,

I always considered the 245 an upgrade to the very good 135. The horsepower is better, the power steering is better (I think), and some of them even came with wet brakes. I also liked the pedal arrangement better; you pushed the pedals down on the 135 versus forward on the 245. The only real problem I recall on the 245 was the timing gear cover breaking near the water pump mount. Most of them may have been cured by replacing the cover with a better reinforced cover. The fan had a long spacer on it to reach the radiator and caused some vibration and cracking problems on the timing cover. I think they are a great tractor; would love to own one.

Tommy
