Ok guys can one of you guide me thru a clutch adjust. I don't have a manual yet so I'm running blind. The pedal is way high right now, I have to stick my knee in my ear to get my foot on it. It seems to have way to much play before it starts to hook up. It acts like it has something foreign in it somewhere. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. I step down on the clutch and nothing happens, but I can bump the brakes with the clutch depressed and it will release sometimes. It appears to have a new clutch and PP. Is it possible that whoever put it in got the clutch disc in backwards, or could the shaft have a dish or bur on it causing the bind. I really don't want to have to split the tractor iffin I don't have to. Thanks for your help.

Billy

I forgot to mention that sometimes it won't disengage to begin with so you can't even get it into gear.

Hi Billy -

The I&T manual has instructions for two adjustments to pedal travel - free play and travel.

The free play is 1/8" clearance between the boss on the bell housing and the top of the arm on the shaft going into the transmission (in front of the actuating rod clevis pin).

Adjusted by inserting a rod, punch or screwdriver in the hole in the end of the shaft into the transmission, loosening the clamp bolt, rotating the shaft as needed, and re-tightening the clamp bolt. HARD. Otherwise, the adjustment slips.

Travel is adjusted by the clevis on the rod between the pedal and the release arm. Ours had to be heated to loosen the threads. Should be set so the PTO stops with the pedal 1" above the foot rest plate.

Pedal is high in the factory setup. We have had better luck with the PTO clutch clearance (3 bolts on the perimeter of the clutch cover, accessible through the bottom cover), adjusted to .060 +/- .005 rather than the factory .090 spec. Works, and requires less pedal travel.

Sounds like something else inside, though. Dirty splines a possibility. We just had one with the center of the PTO clutch punched forward. Erratic and noisy operation.

A ham-handed mechanic who re-assembled the tractor forced the halves together with bolts, rather than making sure both splines were aligned so the thing would slide into place. That mess also broke the retaining ring groove on the $600 input shaft casting. Machine shop was able to restore that.

In correcting that, the replacement clutch plate came from the supplier with 1/8" run-out or wobble! Some weeks you just can't win!

Hope that isn't the problem. You may be able to see someting in the bottom inspection hole, with a light and mirror.

Good luck.

Thanks Jack,

I finally got ahold of a manual, Ran thru all the adj. Then ended up splitting the tractor. Primary disc was scattered. All the rivets were sheared off. Don't know if it was a bad install or just a bad disc. Anyway no scars on the PP or flywheel. Thanks for the help!
