Bought a 65 gas (1962) at auction 3 weeks ago. Battery about shot but started on first rev of starter. Yesterday got such a start and then parked it for an hour. Then no start. Replaced battery, refreshed all contacts, and replaced starter switch. Pulled starter and found two cups of crud (straw, mud, oil, etc.) Also a flat spot on armiture. Cleaned brushes arm, etc. and replaced. Still no start. Getting current to the post on the starter. Also get clicking from starter switch. I guess the no branner is; is it the starter or have I overlooked a cheaper answer?? Thanks for any comeback.

Try taking the starter in to an auto parts store. they can put in on the bench, and tell you there if is the starter or the solenoid, hey you have to take it off either way. I had the same thing a year ago on my 135, and after replacing the battery, cables, and key switch, I finally narrowed it down to the solenoid. Sometimes we just can't see the forest for the trees. Good luck

Try shorting out the starter solenoid. If that doesn't do it, maybe it's time to take the starter to an auto electric place.

Solenoid shorting is when you jump voltage from the hot lead of the solenoid ( where the batt. connects) directly to the lead that goes direct into the starter housing. If the motor turns, then the problem is the solenoid or the wiring thereto. If it's a Delco starter, a solenoid is about $15-$20. Also, could be that the nuetral safety switch is stuck open. Did you check that?

Hey, good one! I forgot the neutral safety switch and associated wires. A voltmeter or continuity checker should prove that sucker out.

Thanks fellows. You have been a big help, but as I started out it looks like the starter needs to be replaced. Jumped to the starter and nothing and put a meter on the post on the starter and got juice there when I hit the starter thus ruling out all inbetween. Off to the Massey dealer, altough I now note that my DR No. does not agree with those in the shop manual #1108503 vs. #1108662, hopefully this will not be a problem. Again Chip and B.C. thanks for taking the time.

Well, you might save a few bucks if you go to a starter shop instead of a dealer. A new armature is only around $20-$30, if it's a Delco type.. Easy job.
In any event, good luck with your 65.

Also, be sure that ground cable is sound.
