Can anyone tell me the differences between the two models? I have a 165, an earlier post is the 1st I've seen of a 168.

Down under models of 165 had 2 stage clutch and 540 and ground speed pto. the 212 diesel perkins in later models, and 203 diesel perkins in early models.The 168 had independant (ipto) hydraulically acctuated, a spacer block between the rear of the gearbox to the front of the diff housing to increase the wheelbase, heavier lift arms on hydraulics. they were all fitted with the 236 perkins which were more h.p. Not sure about u.s.a. or british models differences. regards, sibby.

Do you know if the 168 was marketed as something between the 165 & 175? Didn't the 175 have the Perkins 236 plus the other upgrades you described on the 168?

I'm trying to figure out why MF would have chosen to build the 168, cost maybe?

The 168 had wet brakes, 175 were earlier model with dry brakes down under, the 178 with the 4.248 perkins superceded the 175 with the 236. We had a 175, sweetest engine ever, they had a 5 ring piston, E.G.,3 compression and 2 oil control rings, 1 above the gudgeon pin, one below the the pin and they never had an oil chewing habit like the 248 did in the 178, 185, 188. I had to rering a lot of 248 engines under warranty when they were new. cheers for now, sibby.

We had a 175, and then a 168. they were a 'bit' different. the 168 had the i-pto the 175 had the 2 stage clutch. Similar hp though. The 168 had the beefier three point linkage.

I have always understood that the 1x8 tractors were deluxe versions of the 1x5 models, featuring the transmission spacer to increase wheelbase and other features listed by Sibby. I presume that these sold at a sufficient price premium to cover their costs, thus MF were selling a premium tractor as well as a basic 'bread and butter' machine so had a model to sell to anyone.

Hi all,
Yes Thomas, I think you have it about right with 2 specifications of virtually the same tractor.
For the UK and beyond both tractors were made at 'Banner Lane', Coventry and known as the '5' and '8' Line. The 168 was effectively an upmarket '165' with tyre variations and bigger engine. The 236 engine achieved more power and smoother running due to the addition of a 'Lanchester' balance unit fitted under the crank to eliminate a lot of the 'two up two down' vibrations of the four cylinder engine.The 188 also has this balancer. It is not required on the 152 as the piston spacings eliminate any similar vibrations. I believe that the spacer was fitted a) to physically make the tractor larger and b) to have a driving point for a propshaft for future 4WD models.
Incidentally (searching back to my factory training course on the 100 series) the 148 was going to have a four cylinder engine. The main diesel pump which would have been used has a port plugged to be used on the three cyl 152.

I did not know the 100-series was ever offered in 4wd. Did MF or others make aftermarket 4wd 'kits' that you know of?
