MH-50 1956 new owner recommendations ? Low power

I'm a new owner of a 1956 MH-50 (serial # 505365) with a gasoline Continental Motor.

I bought 35 acres and the tractor came with it. It runs, but it seems like there is almost no power. Just driving up a steep driveway it seemed to be "pulled down" with only a 6' bush hog on.

Where do I start? I'd like to use this tractor for bush hogging, and pulling some downed trees for firewood.

Thanks,
Brian

That is a big brush hog for a 50. Were you running it with the PTO when it pulled down the power? How steep is the hill? What gear were you in?
Check all your other basic stuff like plugs, points, dist cap, rotor, timing, wires, fuel screen, etc.. Most times the problem is something suprisingly simple.

I have a Massey ferguson 50, which is essentially the same tractor. They aren't a powerhouse, but they are a good tractor. Does your 50 smoke when running? is it black smoke? white? The black would indicate fuel problems. White, oil burning.
Does it run smoothe, even without power? Usually ignition problems will make them run rough and erratic. Is the governor working? (and I'm not talking about Ernie Fletcher) They can get out of adjustment, leaving you feeling "powerless".
Do a compression test. See if you have any cyliders "down" on compression. I have a set of shop manuals for the Massey Ferguson tractor, just a year newer than yours. It's the same thing. I live near Louisville, Kentucky. I'd be willing to part with them for a price. I can be reached at jfugit@iglou.com Shop manuals are invaluable with any tractor. They'll give you all the important info, such as compression PSI for your motor. Try to narrow the possibilities, and we'll all be glad to help you get your old Massey up and running like a new one. John

Hi,
Silly question maybe, but are your brakes off and linkage free so that there is no drag. It would not be the first time.

Thanks for the tips.

No it doesn't smoke. It sounds a little rough so it might be a dead cylider. When you ask if the governor is working, how do I test it or know? I think of a governor as a throttle limit. Is that what you mean?

I'm sending you an email about the shop manuals.

Thanks,

Brian in Kentucky
