I am thinking about steping up from a 135 to the 165. The 135 is a very handy tractor but the soil that I plow is very tough on it. IT is All the 135 will do to pull a 2 bottom in it. Will the 165 be a noticable diffrence plowing? I will have to sell my 135 to be able to afford to buy another. What should I look to pay for a decent 165 desiel? Should I also go with power steering?

The MF 165 was advertized as a 4 bottom plow tractor. I have a MF 65 that I wouldn't trade for anything. It has the continental 176.

We have a '68 model w/ perkins AD4-203. Its been a very rugged tractor. Only one complaint, the brakes are such a pain to replace I've put it off for 10 years! But I can get buy w/ the engine braking in multipower high. Power steering would be hard to live without, especially since I put the FEL on it.

Hope you find one, I highly recommend it. Look on Big Deans website, he has a good checklist for MF shopping.

Thanks all for your opinions on this subject. I am going to start the slow process of finding a nice 165 to replace my 135. If anyone knows of a good one within 200 mile radius of Rock Hill, SC let me know. I have looked at a couple around Rock Hill but they had problems with them that I didnt want. I will be patient and a good one will come around. My e-mail is butchboone@cs.com

We have an earlier 165 gas/continental, and we love it. It has enough power to almost everything we need it to, but sometimes wish the engine was as strong as the later perkins. Still a great engine though. Power steering is a must if you ever plan to get a loader, and if you do, I can tell you how to use a front aux pump and the tractor's own hydraulic oil in the transmission. Our 165 pulls our 2-12" IH trailer plow with everything it has in 3rd low, would never be able to pull 3-16's in our heavy clay. We used a 285 on our 3-16" for many years, even that was a little under powered at the end. In my opinion, the 165 is a much nicer tractor, and it really isn't too much taller/ larger in size so it's still very manuverable.

Not a bad little tractor. The farmer I worked for had one, should handle a 3 bottom ok but try your 2bottom you will be able to pull it in 3rd or 4th on the low side the multi power helps. brakes were funny drove it with none for first 5yrs had no problems even with HEAVY loads of hay had good engine braking I finally got brakes after me and the house keeper met on a blind corner in his drive way and i was forced to drive thru his neig hbors yard and trash their landscaping. but you will be happy good small tractor .for heavy work engine will get quite warm trying to run in hi range. also handled steep ditches with bush hog also spend the money and put a ROPS on it

Been using a 1972 165 for many years. Just right for us. Very able to get around thru the woods we live in but enough HP for any job we have on our small farm.

Hi,
Can't help you with the price from this side of the pond but yes go for it. Look out for a wet brake model. It is identified by the half round notches to the left and right and up a bit from the PTO. Dry brake models were not safe when the actuators for the discs got worn.
Power steering; Yes go for it! You might want to put a loader on it one day. Great asset even if not. Look out for any wear in the steering linkage and particularly in the vertical shaft that goes through the front axle casting. This is visible by removing the front grille door and working the steering. If the assistance is better one way than the other you will have wear present and can be quite costly to do a 100% repair.
Otherwise a great tractor, wish I had one instead of MY 135.
Cheers
DP

This is a very good tractor from the size, HP, weight, manuverability, and maintance cost standpoint. It has 52 HP and pulls 3-16" plows. You may view the specs here:
