You previously stated that 168 and 178 models had a spacer between the transmission and differential housings that lengthened the wheelbase. What was the reason/purpose of this?

Bob, The 168 and 188 had the spacer piece, the wheelbase is then a bit longer. Somebody else stated that the rear end oil capacity is increased, also may be adapted to drive a front diff. I only seen one converted and the front of the tractor was very high, also had a very large turning circle. cheers, sibby.

Hi Sibby, Bob, and everyone else.
I believe a firm by the name of 'Selene' made retro-fit kits for most MF 100 series tractors. Some photos of 4WD's can be seen on a site run by Jarle Eltelevest in Norway. It's Massey Ferguson Heaven!!!! Have a look at the 165's, you might see something a little familiar.

I had the opportunity to take a good look at a 178 today. It did not have the spacer. I don't beleive either of these models were ever marketed in the U.S. I have never seen a 168 and have only seen 3 178s. They probably slipped accross from Canada.

Bob, The 178 was more or less a later version of a 175, with a 4/248 Perkins instead of the 4/236 Perkins. The 168/ 188 was a later version of the 175/ 178. They were all very popular down under. Cheers.

Hi,

From what I have seen on the net, there were 2 conversions for the 100 series. The Saleen conversion had a spacer between the tranny and the 4wd ran off of gearing in this spacer. The Schindler conversion ran off a PTO ( Like the 271XE ) from the rear of the tranny. The driveshaft goes from the front axle under the running board on the left side to the PTO. ALmost bought a 135 Schindler last year, only $5,50 CDN, but someone beat me too it. The next time I see one, IT WILL BE MINE!!

Oh Well

Take care

WIll

Not all tractors in the UK. Second pump not needed if the tractor did not have ipto, spool valves or multi-power.
