Hi

the ignition switch on my 135 has always been funny, and its just gone. The key is completley loose, and when you turn it nothing happens, the tractor was ran yesterday. Im certain this is where the problem lies, and will order a new switch next week.

Basically, I need to cut a 7 acre field tomorrow, and was wondering if there s any other way to start it, by shorting across wires or something.

Oh, by the way, it has the 4 post ignition switch, and it is a Perkins diesel.

Sorry for the long post.

thanks in advance

Ben

(I have also posted this on tracotr talk, as i need quick replies!)

I forgot to say in the earlier post that the wire you use does not need to be fastened to the battery permanently, you are just going to use it to quickly start then remove it.

You can energise the solenoid easily and without burning any terminals, you need to run a wire from the terminal on the battery to the small terminal on the solenoid that is mounted on top of the starter, it's between the two large terminals. make sure your tractor is out of gear before you try it.If your engine is in reasonable condition you wont need your heater.

Hi Ben,
Yes Loren is right but you will burn the terminals and besides that, it's a bit of a pain having to get off every time. Adam's suggestion of a car spares shop is probably a long shot. The switch should be the right size and shape to fit the instrument panel. In addition to this the switch should have a 'heat' position. Do you have any other tractor dealers near you. The anticlockwise heat fitted to MF's and later clockwise heat switch was fitted to many UK made tractors, ie Ford, David Brown, Leyland etc.
Do you have a Lucas Service UK depot near you?
Hope this helps
DP

Most auto parts stores will carry a generic starter switch... even a home center with a garden tractor parts shelf should have something...
Try the auto parts stores first...

We've started our 1100 Ferguson (Perkins Diesel) for the last few years by jumping across the solenoid terminals with a screwdriver. We don't use the tractor that much, and just haven't gotten around to fixing the switch or wiring yet. I hold the tip of the screwdriver against the large battery cable terminal, and rock it down until it touches the small terminal. It will spark when it contacts the terminal. Be careful, and make sure the transmission is in neutral first.

MF Start your engine; Loren has the best solution to start your MF 135 Diesel tomorrow to get those seven acres tended to. You will need a permanent fix which you can get from a MF dealer/service center just after that. MOST IMPORTANT 'THO IS TO PUT THE TRACTOR IN NEUTRAL BEFORE THE STARTING ATTEMPT. You can put a short 3 second blast of starting fluid(ether) into the diesel engine air intake if your rig is normally stubborn or a bit slow on the start. You could take a single heavy wire starting cable and clamp it to the large battery cable which is secured to the big lug on the starter motor solenoid. Then just momentarily tap the other end of the jumper cable to the small lug of the solenoid. You may want to wear safety glasses or goggles just in case you foul up the procedure. Should work just fine. The only danger is you may never properly fix the defective switch once you succeed in this manner.
Good luck MF man.

I should clarify this: I'm not using the screwdriver to jump across the two big terminals on the solenoid, just to one of the small terminals, so the solenoid is still functioning. This way, there isn't the full current to the starter passing thru the screwdriver.

You can pull start it, or jump across the terminals on the starter, Battery cable to the other end of selenoid that goes into the starter. I would recommend pull starting it, as you'd be on the tractor. To do this, you put it in the highest forward gear and pull w/ another tractor. You push in the clutch then dump it when moving. Should kick the engine over and fire up.

P.S.You could probably also do this with a truck if no other tractor is available.

There's a real good chance that Massey has Multi-power. If it does you can't pull start it.
