i have a 1958 mf65. it is suppose to have a two stage clutch which will disengage the pto when the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor. my pto will not disengage. also, i can't engage the pto using the pto control lever if the engine is running. i have to shut off the engine and then slightly turn the pto shaft in order to be able to move the control lever to engage the pto. i tried adjusting the clutch pedal linkages per the service manual. but that didn't help. any advice. thanks.

Check the linkage and the outside adjustment on linkage. The adjustment is on the left side close to clutch pedal. You can take inspection plate off and get under tractor with flash lite and look at plates and pressure plate. Have someone work the clutch and take a long screw driver and when clutch is push in you should be able to rotate plates with the long screw driver. Be sure to block the tractor wheels. I have a MF65 and had the outside adjustment at end for about 10 years. Finally I had you same PTO problems. I had to replace the clutch. When I took it apart the small disk fell apart.

I have a MF 165 that had the same problem, and if you remove the inpection cover on the bottom of the tractor there will be 3 bolts, they are set at .090 thousands at the factory, but if you take and turn them out to about .050 to .060 you pto clutch will then disengage. Go to Big Deans website for a blown up picture for better. Hope this helps

Go to Big Deans web site, he was a massey mechanic. He has the procedure for adjusting the 2 stage clutch on his web site. It is done though the inspection hole under the bell house.
