I have a Massey 285 and the power steering works fine on a level field; however when working the side of a hill, I must continue turning the steering wheel toward the uphill side to keep the tractor going straight. Anyone else have this experience???
Thanks,
Ken

BK,

I think this is normal down hill drift from gravity. If you are pulling a plow or disk I know any tractor will tend to drift down hill.

Phil
Thanks for the response. Let me reword the problem... I am not only applying pressure toward the uphill side, but I am actually continuously turning the steering wheel. Maybe a full revolution every 300 feet or so and by the time I've finished a row, I've turned the wheel 30 or so complete turns to the right.
Is this really the norm for a big Massey?
Thanks,
Ken

BK, your 285 is likely just like my 255. Since it has hydrostatic drive the steering wheel does "float" some. I put a spinner knob on my tractor which I have had for 28 or so years and it was mounted sort of between the 7 or 8 oclock hour on a clock so I could use my left hand to steer and my right hand to raise or lower implements. Since my wheel floats sometimes my spinner is at the top, the bottom, on the left, on the right and anywhere in between. I recall asking Big Dean about this and he said it was normal or standard for the hydro steering. My steering wheel is not really loose but that knob will not stay were I want it. I have just gotten to where it doesn't bother me anymore. To be sure, check out any posts on the MF board by Big Dean. In most he will leave a link to his web site. If this issue isn't addressed in the web site I would be surprised. Find his web site and give him a direct he mail. Good luck.

Hi again Phil!
I took your advice and emailed Big Dean.
He believes that one or both of the p/s
cylinders is leaking past the seal(s).
He says it's normal to be able to slightly
turn the wheel after reaching the stop, but
when farming on a hill, you should only have
to apply pressure toward the uphill side; not
continue turning the steering wheel.
I think I'll pull my cylinders and check the
seals.
Hope this helps you as well!
Thanks,
Big Ken
