I am going to look at a MF 255. I need some opinions on this model whether it was a good tractor or were there problems with this tractor that I need to know about. Thanks in advance for the input. I have a 135 and want to step up in HP.

I have a 255 with the 236 ci Perkins diesel, 8 speed (not multipower). I think early models had a 204(?) ci engine. Rear axle differences as well...later models are identified by notches clearly visible from the rear where the axle housings meet the differential housing.
Check the main hydraulic pump, the auxiliary hydraulic pump and the two stage clutch for correct operation.
Great tractor, fuel efficient, holds its value 'cause it's a Massey Ferguson.

Hold its value cause its a maasey ferguson? I don't want to knock down the quality of a m.f. I own a 271 and really like it. In my area masseys have terrible resale value even with several dealers around. I have been to several auctions and the deeres, fords, and Ihs always bring more than the masseys.

Guess it's a local thing then. Dealers around here love to take MF 255's on trade, there's a waiting list of customers.

I went and looked at the tractor and it is in pretty bad shape. Engine ran very well but pto would not stop turning, lift was very slow picking up a box scrape untill you gave it lots of throttle, none of the gages worked except the temp gage, The front grill was wire, but did have headligths still there. Tractor cranks up and runs very well and rest of sheet metal waS IN DECENT shape. The auxillary hydralics when you move the lever that works them fluid shoots out of the couplings. The tractor turns good to the right but is hard to steer to the left. The tires were in good shape. LOOKS LIKE A MONEY PIT, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? What should I offer the guy for the tractor or should I leave this one alone. tach did not work but showed 2350 hours.

I think the hours on the tach are meaningless. This tractor was used hard and not maintained so expect to put lots of money and time into it...and of course while it is torn down you will not have a tractor to use.
I would rate this as a 'parts' tractor...with the screwed up steering it's not even a good drawbar tractor.
Ask a couple of local tractor wreckers what they would pay. Salvage value is all it's worth.
