I just bought a MF65 with a perkins diesel engine and think its the best tractor I've ever had. I have a question that I hope someone can halpme with. I am leaking oil from the bottom of the oil pan, there is something that looks like a plug with a wire sticking out of it and oil drips through it. Can I replace it with a solid plug or is there a purpose for this? Oh yea it's a 1960. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just in front of that "low" point with the hole and "wire", origonally it was a cotter pin, is an inspection plate held on with 4 1-1/16 bolts. Pull the plate off and use a flash light to take a look into the clutch housing. It is interesting to look at at least. Perhaps you can see where the oil is coming from. If just a few drops then it may not be worth the effort to fix.

That hole is a weep hole to keep oil that leaks into the bellhousing from collecting and filling up the bellhousing just like georgia plowboy says. It is rare though that the rear crankshaft seal leaks on those engine. Usually the oil there either is from the rear pan gasket or the transmission input shaft seals. In the 27 years I was a Massey Ferguson mechanic I saw maybe 5 or 6 of the rear crankshaft seals leak. If I can be of further help Email me.

this is to allow oil seeping from the rear crank seal to escape without filling clutch housing

Bossman, the rear main seals do leak, it is very common as they have a rope type sear with no give and take like a lip type seal can tolerate, especially if you have even slightly worn rear main crankshaft bearings which would cause the seal to be hammered due to the shaft moving up and down, i would change it if i split a 40+ year old tractor, its no big deal and better than having to split the tractor twice unless you want the practice. The cork section of the oilpan at the rear used to go hard also and leak with age. Check your transmission seals in your input housing, they have probably gone hard by now and cracked. Check your engine crankcase breather located in front of timing cover could be restricted or choked and causing crankcase fumes to build up and blow out oilpan gasket or past rear main seal. good luck!
