my front wheels should be straight, right!

Hi

I straightened out my front wheels as the right one was turned slightly to the right when the left one was straight. They are now straight. The steering now seems to be more difficult to turn, although it doesnt make as much mess when i turn on gravel.

Im just checking that they should be straight?

When i turn hard left with it off the ground the left one goes further. (ie they both keep going up to the same point, but the left one has gone further than the right one.

Is this right?

thanks

Ben

The outer one on the circle attempts to turn the tightest circle. This lets you "turn". You will detect a rut where the outer one runs and none for the inner.

You need to set the toe-in. It's basically a setting that forces your tires to be closer together in front than rear. Makes it drive in a striaght line on a straightaway. If parallel, it tends to wander off to the left, and then off to the right.

Values are different but around 1/2 inch closer in the front than the rear. Measure equal distances up the wheels, front and rear, left and right. Then measure across the tractor from these points to get your numbers.

Also standing in front of the tractor with the steering straight ahead, flat surface, the bottom of the tire should be slightly (1" thereabouts) closer together than the top. (Caster-camber thing).

Yes, the feature you're describing is engineered into all steering systems of vehicles with wide front end and is called "toe-out on turn". If you drive your tractor in a circle you will see that the tire on one side travels in a smaller circle than the tire on the other side. So that tire has to turn sharper than the one making a larger circle. Since your tractor was knocked so far out of alignment and now steers hard, be sure to check for bent axle ends, spindles, radius rods (if so equipped), tie rods, drag links, etc. so you don't end up wearing out other steering parts due to the overload. I've seen problems like this occur due to operating with front wheel dishes turned out.
