The original idea to take the hydraulic from the trans drain hole isn't practical. 1/2" isn't big enough to feed the pump the required volume, and the hole can't be enlarged because of it's location in the corner of the case casting. I think I recall someone talking about drilling a hole in the PTO shifter cover plate, but it looks as if the oil level would be too low without seriously overfilling the trans. How about if I use an elbow and drop a sump down into the case? I could even get fancy and put a screen on it. Is this the accepted method? If so, is there a specific place to put the hole in the cover where the sump won't interfere with the workings of th PTO? Looks pretty clear down there on the right side if I keep it close to the case. Is there a recommended length to the sump pipe? I want a 1" suction line.
Thanks for your help. Oh, for those who have asked, the thread on the drain plug is a 1.5x18mm.

I did this on our 165, about the same system. I only went w/ a 1/2" suply line. Works good in the summer, but in the winter it's a little slow. What I did was drill tap a hole in the cver plate, I forgett the size off the top of my head. I took a 1/2 female coupler, threaded it on the lathe and put that in the plate, and an elbow and pipe on the inside to suck from the bottom, I used a lock-nut o the outside w/ the nylon and an o-ring on the inside to seal it. Ran the return to a plug on the top of the transmission

Well, a Wisconsin winter would make me a little slow too! I'm in Maryland, so I oughtta be ok with 1/2". My only worry was that if the supply was too small, the pump vacuum would suck air past the pump seals. I guess at 14gpm, that's not gonna be an issue. Thanks!

The only problem I ran into was that I put the supply line a little low in the PTO plate, so I had to cut a small groove in the hole on the rear end casting. Cleaned out the metal shavings as best I could and closed it all up, filled it with oil and used it. I use it to haul manure in the winter as well, and the hydraulics work good enough to raise the gate when it's cold out. Send me an email if you have any other ?'s. Donovan from Wisconsin

Is this for a loader? If so, doesn"t the loader have its own tank? I added an MF232 loader to my MF65 gas tractor using a front-mounted pto pump running off of the loaders own oil tank. I had to have a front pto shaft made at a local machine shop, but now the whole thing works like a charm.

When you say a front mounted pto pump, do you mean a pump driven off the engine crankshaft or does the MF65 have an actual front pto? If you are running it off the crankshaft what kind of pulley/adapter was used to make the connection?

Runs off the crank. There is a plate you can buy off this site that bolts to the pulley, and you left-hand thread a shaft into it to drive the pump. In my case I had to buy a new pulley, have it machined to fit, and purchase short steering arms that allow left turns without the steering arm hitting the shaft. I had the shaft made out of an old steering column and am using a lovejoy coupler to cushion the pump. Mounted the pumpon the front weight carrier. Still working on the plumbing, but it looks like Big Dean has come through for me with good info.

MF30 front pump in reply to Our Farmer, 11-03-2004 05:29:41
Can anyone provide the info for the original front mounted pump on the 2135,3165,30-40-50 tractors? I believe it is an SAE B mount with a 7/8" dia. 13spline shaft. How long is the pump shaft on stock pumps? The crank adapter plate lists for $155!!! My machinist will get that job. Any info appreciated.

That's what I'm talking about. The crank pully has 3 threaded bolt holes that you bolt on an adapter. The adapter has a left-hand thread in the center, into which you screw the shaft which runs the front-mounted pump. My love-joy coupler kept shattering (needed to use an undersized one to fit in the shaft opening), so I had one machined out of steel as opposed to the standard cast ones. Now it runs my MF232 loader like a dream. By sheer luck, my MF65 had the special steering arm, but I hear these are very rare. With the normal arm, it bangs against the front shaft when you turn sharply left.

Can you post a picture of the steering arm? I am looking for ideas on how to change the factory arm to make it work.

Is there anyway to get a photo of this short arm? I am wanting to install a front pump and have the capabilities to fabricate the components but a picture would give me a lot of ideas.

I'm a little concerned about my coupler, too. I guess we'll see. What did it cost you to have one made? Did you try a chain coupler? There's not a whole lotta room there in front.

Thankfully, my friend machined it without charging me. He also machined the shaft, but I had to buy the adapter to fit over the splines on the pump. He made the coupler exactly the same dimensions as the factory 30HP LoveJoy, even used the standard rubber insert. You just can't fit a cast LoveJoy in there which is big enough to withstand the torque of 55HP. Machining it out of good steel was my solution. I don't think you'd fit a chain coupler in there strong enough to last.

I run the 65 all around the farm, so I need good hydraulics for more than just a loader...post pusher, round baler, haybine. All sorts of stuff.

You can drill holes in the pto shift lever access plate they have to be drill in the right place or you can't get the pto in gear. There are fitting you can get that have a nut to hold the fittings in the plate. You do have to run a nipple down on the section below the oil line. I have done that a lot of times. If I can be of further help on this Email me

Thats the way my 245 came stock. Holes in the PTO cover. Supply elbows down into sump, return just flows back in.
