MF 135 Front Wheel Camber

Hi,
Read my manuals on my 1970 MF 135 Deluxe.
Specifies quite clearly that there should be a toe-in of 0-1/2". Doesn't say boo about camber.
Now I understand by the looks of the spindles and the hub attachment that there is NO adjustment.
So, I'm wondering whether my front wheels are normal or whether there may be something bent. Both front wheels are considerably wider across the top..center to center, than at the ground. I'd say that the tops are at least an inch, maybe more outside the bottoms. Can someone tell me whether this is normal or what it should be?

Now, There is considerable 'play' in the wheel bearings, but not so much as to cause this disparity.

Certainly is a pain not knowing anything about this old tractor, but I'm learning.

The correct toe-in is 0 to 1/4" per MF135/MF150 tractor service manual, group iv, section a, part 1, page 18. If you go more you will not be able to steer well. The excess toe-in will cause the outside front tire to dig in and spin the steering wheel out of your hands-if you are lucky enough be able to let go of it.

I hear you, but my spindles are worn pretty good (and tie rod ends worn) and I am sitting on about 3/4" currently and it really helps. 1/4 may be ok new which was the condition when the book was written.

Yes to all your questions. The caster and camber are fixed but modified by wear and the more the wear in the spindles and steering linkage the worse it is.

This is a boon to your turning. Not only does it help it to turn, but it helps bring the wheels back to center afterwards. One is forward/reverse tilting of the spindle, and the other is left to right tilting of the spindle causing the tires to sit as you describe;narrower at the bottom.

The front narrow thing is called toe in and having it keeps the tractor from wandering all over the road in road gear. Bad linkage will hinder this working properly and may require your 1/2" to extend to say 1".

on my MF135, I am gradually replacing bits of the steering linkage and various steering related parts, it has made a night/day improvement in aiming the tractor especially when moving down the road in high gear

I finally broke down and bot real MF service/parts manuals, parts manual really shows what you are getting into before you start twisting wrenches

my front tires are slightly closer together at bottom than at top

Since squashing the front of the tractor (with a pile of rocks on a loader for example) will tend to bend the front axle to take the camber the other way, I'd say yours is probably about right. I know the front axle on my 135 has been broken and welded and those front wheels might tilt a bit the opposite direction of yours.

Lift the front and check the spindle bearings, you might find them worn through contributing to the wheel tilt.
