Wheel Spacing Advice Needed

Hi,
Reconditioning my 1970 MF135 and will eventually decide upon a Front and Rear wheel spacing configuration.

I have both level and quite steep terrain on my 20 acres and will be doing mostly bush hogging...with mostly long winding 'runs', but this may include getting in and around quite a number of newly planted trees too.

The MF135 (as I'm sure you all know) has quite a range of wheel spacing both front and back.

I'm thinking of as wide as possible on the back...72" I think, for hill stability... and rather narrower (mid-range) for the front as I do not want to expand my turning radius too much.

Any thought or experienced advice is greatly appreciated.

I'd put them as wide as possible.

Better to have some mowing to re-work than to have your family haul the junk tractor off for scrap after your funeral.

Bill I personally do not like the rear tires wider than the bush hog. I prefer the bush hog to cut the width of the tractor. Adjust your rear tires out to apoint which is covered by the Bushhog, as you stated this is what you will be doing mostly. This will allow you to get close to the small trees you referenced. For the front tires run those out to line up with the rears so that the tractor is uniformed. Please note this may not be the ideal situation for very steep terrain. Just my opinion.

Agree on the rears which dictates a 6' mower. On the fronts, your suggestion is closer to a tricycle and that reduces the size of your "rollover box". I set mine on the inside edge of the rears so the front tire marks barely don't show behind the rears.

Not sure that the spacing has that much effect on the turning radius for the safety involved.

If necessary, get a riding lawnmower to trim around the trees. I used to have a 15hp 3 cyl diesel with a 5' 3 blade finish mower mounted on the rear for my yard work. Didn't take long to realize that a rear mounted mower was not suited for close work around yard vegitation. The mid mount lawn tractor is much better suited.
