I have a problem with my power steering pump sucking air. I have to bleed the lines every time I operate my tractor. Does anybody have any thoughts of what might be causing this, and how to correct.

Thank you

I know Big Dean is adamant about adding the Permatran oil while the tractor is running. If you don't see anything leaking, maybe the air is always there. Just a thought. Thank God I haven't seen that problem on my 245 yet.

Check the easy parts first, all connections, obvious leaks, wet hoses, etc. Mine leaked at the front steering cylinder shaft seal. Massey has a seal kit for it. Otherwise, your pump may be dying or the steering wheel "motor" needs attention. You haven"t used auto-trany fluid in it have you?

Clogged inlet filter (screen)?

Fluids like tractor oils, have air molecules trapped between the oil molecules. When you $uck on the fluid, if it resists and the atmospheric pressure of the fluid approaches zero, this air can be sucked out in the form of bubbles which could make your pump cavitate.

But thinking aloud, if that were the problem, you couldnt' use it at all. I think you are onto it as a small leak could let air in over time but during operation, once purged, it would hold up and allow the system to work..... ..... ..but then maybe there would be a wet spot around what is leaking where the fluid leaked out of the damaged (loose fitting) area during non-operational periods.
