The Massey-Harris 44 Special came out in 1953 at serial number 50001 and sold right along side the "plain" model 44 during that year only. The Special was a refinement and improvement in many ways over the plain 44, especially the 3 point hitching system, deemed the "Hitch-all". It was not as prone to breakage as the 3 point "plow-hitch" on the 44. All of the 44 Specials of which I am aware of came with cast wheels, both fronts and rears. Strangely, the brake and clutch pedals were larger and wider on the Special too. (Just to be different, one wonders?) All in all, I agree with Marlowe; one beautiful, strong, and very useful tractor - to this very day. Hope the one you are viewing proves to be a worthy example of one of the last Massey-Harris greats!

one of the top 5 best tractors ever made 800 to 2500 all depends on the shape it's in and location check engine ID should be a 277 NOT a 260

Marlowe, you know how much heat we take with our
unbiased truth. I've dropped countless handles, to shake the spam that hits after posting a'fact.'
Remember a few years ago, when someone posted, what had the family traded the 44, in on? All seemed to regret the mistake deal. Pricing a row
crop Special against anything is near impossible.
By the final production run, in 1955, this was
King of all red. It won't happen again, so we must rebuild the parked, rusting Specials. Oliver
carried the torch in the 60's, with 1800D, series B,C, 1650D, working framed tractors. Ever hear from Brad, in Michigan? He knows where most MH's
in the state, are waiting, but had to hide. Brad
could get a guy owning ten or twenty MH's, in a few days. Good to see you name on the board, you know,Mr. G, you are absolutely correct. I must
study a Special, whenever I see a Row Crop, see
what rear tires are sized to, etc. Happy Holidays,
'ol Pal.Hope you didn't pop any wheel wedge bolts.
