Can someone explain a 55 serial number meaning to me. I have viewed the MH serial numbers on this website but the one I have doesn't make sense, 55G1SFL1314. Could one or more of these letters be a transscription error? Also, was the 555 offered with the 3 point hitch option?
Thanks

All the 55,s and 555,s I have seen have the full wheatland fenders as they are called.Massey-Harris built a regular altitude which is designated by the number 1.The high altitude is designated by the number 5.The main difference between the two is the jetting in the carburetor. On your tractor check on the top of the frame just ahead of the clutch pedal the serial number is stamped into the frame. It is possible that your number was stamped wrong on the number plate.I check the serail numbers I have for the 55,s and 555,s and there is no L,s in the list.I,m sure the L in your serial number should be a number 1.Drop me a line on hot mail and I can send you the serial numbers lists I have.

It is possible that the l should or could be a one.If it is a one the tractor would be a 1952 model.

Thanks for all the replies. I knew the 55's didn't have the 3 point option, wasn't sure about the 555. I am also stumped about what L and the 1 means in the serial number. But you guys have taught me something because I would never have know about low altitude pistons and standard tread. I had figured out the gas and foot clutch part. So are you staying this tractor was made in 52. The serial number website had me thinking maybe 47, but I have a novice at this.
Also, were 55 standard tractors only available with clam shell fenders or could you special order the wheatland style?
Thanks again guys, I really enjoy this website, don't contribute much but have learned alot!!
