I need some help loading windows 98 on my backup computer. A friend that does this all the time gave me a startup disc and told me how to fdisk it and format it. I did that but when I try to extract windows from my 98 disc as instructed it says it cannot open the path to the disk He cannot figure out what went wrong. Can any of you computer guys help me? If you can email me on how to do this I would sure appreciate it. Big Dean

Big Dean,
Assuming you are using a Windows 98 startup disc here is what you need to do. Boot computer from the start up disc. It should load drivers for your cd-rom ( make sure your Windows 98 cd is in the cd-rom drive). After is booted, it should be at a command prompt ( A:\ ). You will have to change to your cd-rom drive ( might be either d: or e: ). Then type setup.exe and it should start the installation process. If not please let me know.

Also, when you formatted your drive, did you do a "format /s" or just a "format"? The first command saves your system files, the second doesn"t. If you did the second you can copy the system files from the 98 startup disk with this command, from the a:\ prompt type "sys c:\".

Jeff

Thanks Jeff I tried what you said it kept giving me a bad command. This computer was gave to me by my son & has had everyone that came along messing with it before I even started so there real no telling what has been done to it. It would load windows for just a minute the them blue screen would come up. That is why I was going to fdisk it. It seam the CD ROM driver the start up disk loads on it won't run my CD ROM.

Dean,
If the installation starts running from the CD, but stops after a minute or so, there may be a bad spot on the CD. Do you know anyone else that may have a CD you could try?

If all else fails, you could try copying the 98 cab files to your hard drive & try installing from them.

Big Dean,

Crack the case on that PC and get me the model # and mfr for the CD-ROM. I've run into this exact problem before. Also, are you trying to load Win98 or Win98SE (Second Edition)?

Windows included a number of generic CD-ROM drivers on the boot disk, but it wasn't that uncommon to find a drive that they couldn't handle. The trick is to make a custom boot disk for the machine that includes the necessary drivers.

If you can tell me the info for CD-ROM and which version of Win98 you're using, the odds are very good that I can cut a boot disk for you.
