I know this subject has been beat to death but a search of this website doesn't produce much info. What should I use in a Massey that is more of a toy and show tractor than workhorse. Straight 30 or 40 weight, 10/30, 10/40 or ?? I live in northern Wisconsin and she won't be started in the winter.
Thanks,
Ben

You're right this subject has been beat to death and everybody has an opinion on it. If you talk to the people who know lubrication systems they will tell you that a modern multivis oils like 10W30 or 10W40 with the latest API classification (SL I believe, if its a gas engine) is the best thing you can put in your engine. There are a lot of people who say the detergent will cause the sludge to come off and cause an oil system failure but I have never seen documeted evidence by any professional lubrication people that say they have seen this or that it can even happen. Me? I use multivis oil in all my gas powered equipment period.

Once you've cleaned out the deposits, use the most modern oil you can lay your hands on. It will be the best protection against bearing corrosion and sludge formation. High detergent is a benefit to keeping an engine clean that isn't run much. Plan on working it some way to get the oil hot a few times a year to boil out the water anyway.
