On the MF40 the complete transmission including the torque converter also the rear center housing and differential are all one big reservoir. My guess is that there is not enough oil in it for the transmission pump to pick up. that is if it was working before the oil was drained.

Re: MF 40 industrial question to BIG DEAN ??? in reply to Big Dean, 02-07-2005 11:16:23
Hello Dean what oil is supposed to be in there ?
dextron hydraulic or transmission hydraulic oil or other ??? and the tractor was working good it would jerk a bit when engaged but i think the linkage is worn or needs adjustment because he said it the engine would idle up and then junp into gear and would push the shovel into the ground to no end tires would spin or engine stall anyway i appreciate your help with the MF40
whats the best spot to fill transmission ? THANK YOU !!!! Chris Thompson

The oil used in those is Massey Ferguson Permatran 3 any good universal Trans/Hyd oil will work in it if it will cross over to one of these Permatran 3, M1129A or M1127. When they are drained at all the plugs. There are 3 in the plate on the bottom of the transmission and one just in front of the rear axle housing on the left bottom of the rear center housing. They hold 8 gallon. You fill them through the big plug just to the left of the shift levers. They all check with the dipstick on the right side of the rear center housing. If I can be of further help Email me. I have a picture that show all of these thing If you would like it send me an email address.

from what i remember the Ferguson 40 was an Air Force special order. If the killing of the engine continues upon putting it into gear check that tourque converter
