I had both clutches replaced last year by a local mechanic. Had a machine shop make the special clutch tools to set clutch. Ever since I got it back I cannot engage the PTO without shutting the engine off. With bush hog on the PTO clutch will digengage but drag. Sooo, I split the tractor and readjusted the clutch to a gnats a%$, checked bearings, OK. Reset external adjustments, no change. Just grinds unless I shut the tractor down. Also have to bungee cord the PTO lever back or it will occasionally slip out of gear. Any advice from the experts would be appreciated, Thanks.

I put a new clutch on my 65 when I bought it and had the same problem. I was using the numbers in the books. Big Dean gave a differnt set of numbers for the adjustments, and it worked much better.

Are you sure that you have the mechanical linkage from the pedal hooked up correctly? There are 2 holes in the pedal casting one for when using the PTO and the other for when you are not using the PTO and you want the clutch pedal in a lower position for easier use. Clutch pedals on a 65 are rather high and inconvient to use. J Kirsch in NY

Hi Rednight

here we go answer 1: the pto clutch is adjusted through the access hole on the bottom of the bellhousing . just at the rear of the engine underneath there is a plate held on by two maybe four bolts .ithink about a 15/16 af spanner is the size. remove this plate and you can see the flywheel ;fins; . i use a big screwdriver to turn the flywheel
stick it in between the fins to turn the engine slowly until you can see the adjusting bolts there are three equally spaced with a lock nut 5/16. unf thread 1/2: open end spanner you will need two spanners one to loosen the lock nut a wee bit and the other to adjust the screw to give a clearance of 70to 80 thousandths of an inch of an inch
A little bit fiddly but you will be a master by the time your done ha/ha.

question #two take the pto lever cover of the one with the lever on left hand side of transmission .
the lever is held onto the shaft with a :roll:pin .
Using a pin punch a little bit smaller than the pin support the lever/ shaft assembly in a vice and tap the pin out it shouldnt take much effort as you will find the shaft and the pto lever hub will be worn.
when you remove the pin the lever will pull of the shaft .Push the shaft out. on the inside of the plate you will see a detent block which has a ball bearing and spring which locates in the block on the end of the shaft detents .
usually the area between the detents is worn if so you can braze the worn area up and file it back to shape with a bit of patience it will look good when your done fit a new spring and ball and roll pin .it will work good as new while you have the pto cover of look inside and you will see the pto gear it should look fairly square and uniform if not it will have to be looked at
ps drain about two gallons of transmission/hydraulic oil to get a good look at it. good luck and remember to wear eye protection regards hutch.

Well I tried the adjustments from the access hole and did get quite proficient after making a couple of new tools to get the length and "loop". Messed with the linkage adjustment, front and back. Clutch still drags. Guess I will just have to split her again and disassemble the clutch and look it over. Probably go ahead and put new bearings in for the price. I have a good book that shows the exploded views, maybe the mechanic didn't get everything stacked up correctly. Might as well replace the rear main seal while I am in there. Motto, Ya want something done right, do it yourself! I will keep you all posted. Thanks again.

Clutch still draging after adjustment in reply to Rednight (IL), 02-11-2005 06:23:20
Hi Rednight
I had a misable time with the clutch in my early 165, I rebuilt the clutch myself when I first brought the tractor home. after a long spell in the workshop for other reasons, I started using the tractor and found the cluch was draging and near impossible to start the pto, also found that pushing the clutch in when the engine was idleing would slow the engine down more so.
after doubting my workmanship I ordered a complete new clutch assembly which arrived quickly. at that point I had to fix the pin through the beam of the front axle, moving it back into position with a lever positioned between the end of pin and the crank shaft I noticed that the end float of the crankshft was excessive! after pulling the engine out and taking the sump off I found the thrust washers in the bottom of the sump.
I hope your story turns out better than this, although everything is back together now with oversize thrust washers and my new clutch works great .
Cheers Arthur from Tassy
