I went and looked at that 44 again and spent more time on it. And now have a better idea whats there. The lift has good lifting power, the steering is smooth, brakes work good, the gears are a little slopy but stayed in gear. I was not able to find a serial tag, were else could I find a id. number? I had the tractor in second gear with about 1/3 throttle and pressed the brakes really hard to see how she would respond under some type of load. And it did not even seem to phase the engine. However after I push the clutch in the enginge would not come back to a steedy engine speed. It keept surging, the guy selling the tractor pulled the choke out and it settled down. He thought it was the govener out of adjustment. Is this a big problem? is the carb out of adjustment or is something bigger??? Thanks for the help Andrew

Most of the time surging is caused by the carb. The gov. is trying to compensate for the carb problem. Notice how the surging stoped when the choke was pulled out. A carb rebuild and possable linkage adjustment would more then likely fix the problem.

Serial number is stamped on the top of the transmission case to the left of the PTO/pulley lever. You may have to scrape the paint a bit to find it.The govenor linkage isn't hard to adjust if that is all that is wrong with it.Internal wear in the govenor could be a part of the problem.Could also be sticky linkage. That would not keep me from buying the tractor.
