MASSEY 165 QUESTIONS

Hello, This is my first post but i have been reading this board for several months. I bought a Massey 165 last week. The tractor is a little hard to crank but no big deal. I have two potential problems. #1 i have a fuel leak coming from the injector pump or one of the lines to the pump. It's not gushing but it will soak the side of the engine if it runs very long. Power and everything seems fine. #2 I have a little blow by coming from the front of the engine but today i noticed some oil leaking from the front of the engine. This is the first time i noticed the oil leak. I worked the trator for about an hour today doing some tillage work. Should i just keep a check on the oil and keep running her or what?

The one and only 165 I've worked on blew the Power steering hoses and covered the front of the engine with oil. It leaked for weeks before it actually blew

If you have a fuel mist come from one of the injector lines that sounds like either a loose line nut or one that has a crack in the line causing your fuel leak. The fuel coming from an injector line is under high pressure it can penetrate the skin and if it gets in your blood stream it can be fatal so be careful when working around there. The oil leak could be a front crankshaft seal or excess blow-by blowing oil out the breather tube. The AD4-203 engines like the one in the MF165 have a gasket that will work out from the left side of the timing cover causing a pretty nasty leak on them.

Are either one of those problems in need of immediate attention of can i just keep a check on the oil and run it until i have more time?

Do you know where the oil is leaking from? If it's a valve cover it isn't going to hurt anything untill you can get around to it. If it's between the block and head, keep EXTREMELY close tabs on that, check the radiator for oil and bubbles, and the oil for water. Our 285(perkins 318 deisel) leaks oil all down the block from the head, but doesn't have any oil in the water or the other way around, so we still run it. One of these years it's getting an overhaul as it has almost 6,000 hours on it.

I can't say much about the fuel leak, but if it's the pump be prepared to shell out some serious $$. If it's an injector line or something else, those can be had from a dealer or a junk yard.

Nice pic.

The oil appears to coming somewhere from the front bottom of the engine where the front of the engine is bolted to the frame. Could it be coming out of the blow by line? If so what causes that?

As for the fuel leak i noticed after i posted that it seems to be a very small pressurized mist
but over time it soaks the engine block.

Yesterday i was dragging an 8 shank "field conditioner" (looks like a cultivator to me).
Anyway i had the draft set about as low as it would go and the ole 165 would just snort right along although i did have to step on the differential lock a couple of times.

Big dean pretty much answered everything.

One thing on the differential lock, don't step on it if one tire is spinning. If it is, just step on the clutch then engage the lock. You could cause serious damage to the rear end if you do step on it while one tire or the other is spinning.

That is the second loader on our 165. The 1st one kept breaking, finally gave up on fixing it. This one was mounted on our 1755 Oliver when we bought it.
