I've had my 165 about 15 yrs now. Good tractor, had to do some work on mine, let me know if you need some pictures of the inside of the trans, hydraulics or clutch. Had mine apart acouple times in the last few years. I would get the CD that Big Dean has for sale on his website, it's worth the $$$. Lee

That is the way my 255 is.

When I first got the tractor I changed all fluids. I was a moron and put fluid in the planetaries-because it had a fill and drain plug-then when I checked the main it was WAY overfilled-that is when I realized they are all connected.

The 255 has wet brakes. Most 165s have dry brakes which means the planetaries are not lubricated from the differential.

I believe the 165 would have the same characteristics as the 135. Our 135 takes 8 gallons of Permatran III oil for the hydraulic system and transmission. The oil addition port is the threaded plug by the transmission levers, left hand side. Hope this helps. I can't believe that the 165 and 135 would be that much different.

The 135 has dry outboard drum brakes. To cope with increased power the 165 has a faster transmission and epicyclic reduction units on each end of the rear axle. The 165 has inboard multiplate brakes which brake before the epicyclic. Later 165's had wet brakes so have no seals between the epicyclics and transmission. Earlier models have dry plate brakes, so there are seals on the end plates to keep transmision oil out of the brakes, and the epicyclic is a similarly sealed unit.
