Hello,
I am renovating a '70 MF135 Perkins Gas with an alternator.

The wiring is really bad...burnt ones, ones hanging not connected, others tied together poorly along the run, bundles of all the same type and color wire wrapped in electrical tape with unknown origins and destinations, etc....and I'm pretty ignorant about electicals and can't trust that what I've got is right...even if it works. Some things work and some don't.

What I want to do is scrap all the old wiring and start over. I intend to do this in a step by step process. First the essentials (making it run), then the gauges (when I replace later) and finally the lights.

So help from you electrical genius out there please. I have wiring diagrams from the service manual and Big Dean. My problem is that they are all 'schematic' in nature. I need help 'really' understanding what wire goes to what post... and the schematics don't show this.

The ignition switch has a central post and 3 surrounding posts. What wires of what gauge leave the ignition and where to they go...specifically?

Are there any wires leaving the regulator that are supposed to branch? If so, where and to where?

My voltage regulator has 4 slots.

My alternator has 3 connections. One with a plastic clip on the back central between two others. There is a post on the left (from rear perspective) with a wire attached and another post with a rubber hooded wire attached at the right.
Where do the 3 wires come from?

Finally, is there a wire-color scheme that is appropriate or worthwhile to consider to make reference later easy?

Your help in this matter will be MOST appreciated. It is the part of this project I'm MOST intimidated about....

Thanks for the hand holding,

Bill

Bill, I have a MF 135 with perkins diesel and am looking for help with my wiring just likeyou were recently. Did you ever find any good diagrams or infomation to use for the wiring that n average person can understand. Thank you very much for any help. Greg Parker

Link Bill ,this is BigDeans photosite. It has excellent schematics for wireing most of the engines. Picture #5 should be yours. ray-s

Ray,
Yes, thanks. BUT, I actually have studied this diagram and it is helpful indeed, but there are aspects of it that are incomprehensible in a 'practical sense'.

For instance, my ignition switch has 4 posts on the back three of which are in use and one with 2 wires attached. So it doesn't correspond well with the diagram. Also, my voltage reg. has no markings and has more that 4 wires emerging...perhaps some of those replace what are apparently wires that lead from the #2 wire to coil and solenoid (I'm assuming the DOT is actually a junction). I also assume that the 3 red wires going to the solenoid are all going to the main/large terminal and that the yellow coming from the safety switch goes to the "S" terminal of the solenoid (though this is not labeled). Does the other solenoid terminal go to the starter?

Also, no wire gauges are specified and with the 'crap' that's currently on my tractor, I need some guidance.

For instance, also, I have a wire that goes to my coil from the wire illustrated leading from the "F" wire (as it nears the alternator)...just attached in a spot where the insulation has been removed and the attachment via wire twisting is covered with electrical tape....

Anyway, I don't wish to whine, sorry. Just feeling a little overwhelmed with the mess I need to straighten out and not having the knowledge to do it. I have been reading 'the basics' of wiring for automotive and I think I'm getting a picture that is somewhat trasferrable to the tractor.

Bill , I just looked up that diagram and I see what you mean about confusion. I am no expert on wireing. I have always had letters on any Voltage regulater I worked with. And worked more with Generators. Field on regulator goes to field on gen. or alt. I do not think that should be a junction from that no 2 terminal. No 10 ga. wire from the big terminal at solenoid to ampmeter and no 10 ga wire from amp.to alternator (bat) ? you could use no14 ga wire from amp. to switch. One of the switch terminals probably feeds a lite switch. The rest of the wires can be no 16ga. Are you sure there are no numbers stamped on the back of the switch ?. You will have to determine which switch terminals feed what. There should be a spring loaded posistion to activate the solenoid for starting.. My friends UK 135 has a key switch that woorks the starter .I don't know anyone with a US gas to check out..I will leave my e-mail unchecked if you want to mail direct to me with specific questions. There are a couple of fellows on the forum that know this wireing stuff better than me. ray

Thanks again Ray.
I have been doing my homework on other sites around the Internet and have learned a great deal at this point. Now I'm to the point of ignorance instead of 'complete' ignorance. I think I understand the basic electric circuits of starting and charging and believe I can interpret the diagram better now except for the 'dots' that seem to show a splice of wires and a resistor or diode or something in-line to the coil. I see Big Dean offered information to someone else on the regulator and said he has a better diagram. I will send him email pleading for the updated version. I'll post what I learn to this thread as I go along and maybe leave 'bread crumbs' for other ignorants like me.

Bill , Good you got in contact with Big Dean. If he can't set you straight you have a problem. Now all I got to do in the near future is figure out how to get a good wireing schematic for our UK 135. So I can get the fuel gauge working. I hate it when someone cuts off wires and tapes them up. good luck Ray-s

Commercial wiring harness- best way? in reply to Bill Darte, 03-21-2005 06:40:29
It might make sense to invest in a wiring harness from MF for your rewiring? I'm not sure whether this item will come with instructions or a better wiring diagram. Perhaps others have experience with such. Good luck.
