Hi, We have an MF 203 Loader, fited with Perkins AD3-152 engine, yesterday it developed a Miss in the Engine - There is a sound coming back into the aircleaner, when No. 1 Exhaust Valve opens a loud noise is heard out of there too, HAs anyone any ideas what it may be? all the valves appear to be opening & closing properly.

Hi Andrew,
Yes, the valves will certainly be working OK. Have you checked the clearance 10thou with both valves on each cylinder closed and the engine turned clockwise 1/2 turn. This is not an exact procedure but we've never had any problems.
The noise in the air filter sounds like compression passing the inlet valve due to a burnt seat or possibly carbon holding the valve open slightly. With the engine running slacken the injector or pump pipe nut and the one which alters the engine speed the least will be where the problem is.
Nothing short of removing the cylinder head.

Thanks David, we thought as such - the next thingwe would be doing is removing the cylinder head.We will see how it all goes, Andrew.

Just to update on the situation, we got the cylinder head off tonight, & the Head Gasket was blown Between number 1 & 2 cylinders, but not into the cooling system, hence why there was a noise - when one was coming up on compression - it was pushing the air out through the other cylinder - hopefully we will have it going early next week, Andrew.
