We have an early model 180 with a Saginaw power steering unit. The book calls it a hand pump. We put in a new shaft seal and also had the dealer install a new shaft seal and it still leaks a lot of fluid. It runs out of fluid in about 2 or 3 hours. They still sell the seal kit but many parts for this old pump are Not Available. Do they make a kit or??? to convert it to the later style.? I think the later models were a Charlynn unit. Thank you for any help you might give me.

At one time there was a kit to convert the Saginaw unit to a Char-Lynn. In later years I converted them withou the kit. The mounting bracket is different, but you can remanufacture your existing one or make one. The mounting holes for the hand part is what is different. The lower yoke assembly is differnt as well. As far as the hand pump is concerned any unit that is from a an open center sytem will work (not the 1100 series as they were closed center). As I recall you can tweak the existing lines to work.

We have an old MF550 combine. Do you think the pump from the combine would work? Is it an open center pump? Thank you for your reply.

I was somewhat mistaken on my first reply. The 550 used a differnt setup with a control unit and a seperate valve. Dave called me today and I did some more research. The only tractors that used the Char-Lynn control valve of that style were the later 180 and the 1080. I have the correct control unit here, but I need to find a shaft with the proper spline to convert your lower coupling to it. Although I stated that any open Char-Lynn would work I had forgotten that the 180 had a different top plate. You can email me directly at dold@alliancecom.net .
I'll keep you or Dave posted on what I come up with.
