I have a massey harris 44. But the model on the side says 44DS. The serial #is 4536. Or close to that. I'm assuming that model means 44 diesel standard. Or could it mean Diesel special? I don't think the serial # matches to a special. Also, if I turn up the fuel, will I get any extra power out of it? Has anyone tried it? How many horsepower would you get out of it? 45? Any info would be appreciated!! Thanks

I think your tractor is a 1951 44. They did not start over with serial numbers when they came out with the Special sometime in 1953.

The 44 diesel was tested in Nebraska Test # 426. It developed 41.8 horsepower on the belt and 30 on the drawbar. I don't have a copy of the test but am quoting Wendel. These results seem light. The gas version had 47 and 41 respectively. They usually tried to make them closer than that.

Can't help you on turning up the pump.
