MF 165 Not Starting

Hello, I used my MF 165 dsl Saturday, started just fine. I did a little blading with the tractor. Stopped by my neighbors to shoot the breeze with him. When I tried to leave the tractor wouldn't start. I ended up jumping the connections across the starter to get it started.

How can you tell if the problem is the ignition switch or the neutral saftey switch. I do not believe its the starter because when I arced across the terminals it started fine (messed my screwdriver up though). Would it have started if the neutral saftey switch was bad?????

Does any one have any ideas or suggestions!!!

Thank You

If it is the safety switch remove it from the tranny and sandpaper the contacts.

I had the same problem with my 165. It turned out that it had a bad connection on one of the terminals on the ammeter.

Hi Charlie,
Looks like your starter is OK.(shame about the screwdriver). If you had a solenoid problem it's unlikely you'd have started it at all. ot at least at the first attempt. Your problem is almost certainly the safety switch located just in front of the steering box. Peel the rubber cover back and pull off terminals or ondo the screws if it's an older 165 (very short flat screwdriver needed). Twist the wires together or join them with a piece of wire making sure that the don't touch chassis as they will be live.
Ensure the tractor is in neutral and start. If nothing happens then it's likely to be your key switch. Fit a test lamp to check for supply to and from the switch.
Cheers
David P
