The pto has a sliding coupler the when the shift lever is pulled back it slides the coupler forward to connect the pto shaft to rear shaft of the three point pump that is engine speed. When the pto shift lever is move forward the coupler has gear on the back end of it that meshes with a gear on the differential pinion shaft as the wheels turn it turns the pto shaft the faster the wheels turn the faster the pto turns. A lot of people use ground speed to turn a pto driven hay rake there are also planters that use ground speed pto so the planter is driven accordantly with the speed the tractor is moving. I am sure there are other implements that it is used for but this is all that I know of. It is also good for backing up an implement by jacking up one of the wheels and putting the pto in ground speed put the tractor in reverse. When you engage the clutch it will turn the pto shaft backwards. It really works gook when you get a posthole digger hung in the ground you can turn the auger backwards to back it out of the ground.

The same method is also useful in starting other old tractors with PTO but without starter motor.

I use my MF35X to start my old Case tractors (C,L,LA).
