Awhile back I mentioned that I was getting oil in the radiator and was going to replace the head gasket. OK, I have the head off and am looking it and the block over real carefully. As yet, I see no cracks, (I'm not done looking), but noticed the sleeves can spin in the cylinders. Is this normal? Anything else I should look for while it's off? One of you mentioned to be careful with the precombustion chambers. Can I have a better description of these? I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Once again, this board is great! Chuck

Chuck , The sleeves are a loose fit although if you can spin them easily with your fingers with the pistons in them don't stop at rebuilding the head . The head holds them in . The precombustion chambers are where the injectors sit . On the face of the head you will see 4 half moon holes ( at least they should look like half moons ) . If you clean the head real good you'll notice circles around these holes of a different color than the head . These thread out of the head . The new ones thread in with a special tool and then the ears are ground flush . I got lucky the replacement head I got had good ones . My head was cracked between the valve seats . I suggest a manual simply for the pictures if nothing else .( worth a thousand words ) Also the head bolt tightening sequence is better with the book in front of you . Good luck ,you can do it . Mine ran when I was done so there is hope . Mike

Hello Mike,
Thanks for the info.
I put the head back on after a somewhat thorough inspection, (I didn't find anything of concern) and it fired right off.(Well, with a shot of ether, as always) I let it run for approx.45 minutes and then let it cool for about an hour. No oil in the radiator (yipee). I then mowed about an acre and let it cool again. Again, no problem. I'm going to check it again in the morning and if no issues, I'll call it good.
I'll post tomorrow with the results.
Chuck

Hey Chuck , Easy on the smelling salts ( Either ) . I have pretty good luck with spray silicone or WD40 . Don"t care what it says on the bottle , Either is hard on any engine . Others can correct me if I"m wrong but I believe it"s the propellant in the spray it starts on , Wd 40 or sylicone at least have a little lubricating quality to them . Maybe not much but definatly more than Either . If your standard has glow plugs Eithers hard on them too . Plug her in , even if it seems pleanty warm , use a good stong battery , and lighter duty smelling salts and you wont have to work on it as much . Just a thought , Mike
