I'm ready to remove the PTO cover to get at the hydraulic fluid screen filter I understand is behind it (1970 MF135 without auxillary)....
Anyway, I tried to remove the PTO handle before removing the cover (assume I have to), but the Allen set screw is completely rounded out.
Before I drill it out and replace I wanted to make sure it was necessary in order to remove the cover.

Thanks...

Hold on there Bill,
The original pin fitted to the pto engagement lever was solid. IF the lever has been removed at some time it is usually easiest to fit a roll pin (hollow). You do not need to remove the lever to remove the cover. In reply there is a gasket between the cover and casing. Yes the filter can be removed through the side but it's on the opposite side but not accessible from the other side. Don't forget to re-wire it when you fit it.
Cheers
DavidP

Probably, though I've not replaced it. Noticed a bit of an oil leak down there now so maybe I should have. By tomorrow I'll check the parts book.

somebody mentioned raising left side rear wheel up on big blocks

tilts tractor and hydralic oil away from the PTO shifter opening so you can change filter without draining the hydralic oil

Don't take the handle off, you waste effort. The shifter bearing is the cover and they come off together. Taking the handle off gains you NOTHING at all.

You do have to fiddle a bit when reassembling to get the shift yoke on the gear.

You will need to loosen the left foot rest front because the rear uses some of the same bolts as the cover.

When you go for the filter be SURE to grab the bottom dirt cup as you lift the filter else you will dump lots of grunge directly into the pump inlet.

Thanks Gerald, that's precisely what I wanted (and hoped) to know.

And thanks for the reminder about handling the filter...
