I have what I'm told is an old TE20 diesel (1958?) and a 4 cyl diesel MF35 (sixties?).
At present neither is road registered and both came without any paperwork. I'd like to tow a boat weighing about 3.5 tons (inc trailer) on the road (approx 25 mile journey). Can anybody advise me please of the road legal limits of both machines in the UK and also what I need to do, apart from an engine overhaul, to make them road legal anyway? Would I have to fit indicators etc.? All advice much appreciated, thanks.

You also might want to post this on tractor talk

It needs to be insured and taxed and have a number plate on the back. you MIGHT need indicators, im not sure, think its a bit more relaxed when its less than 5 miles from the farm and doing an agricultural purpose.

www.dvla.co.uk email them

25 miles on a 35 towing a 3.5tonne boat wont be much fun though if you have to do it often..... Better hope you have a comfortable seat!

It will get up some speed.....open it to max RPM and let it keep pulling the revs, but it will take hours.

25 miles will take about three hours to cover. You might be better off going to a auto rental place and renting one of our american gas guzzeling, global warming, ozone depleating Pick-up trucks or SUV's.

It might be quicker and potentially less expensive than fixing up and licensing a tractor just for the job.

Just my $0.02

Bruce,
go to www.fofh.co.uk/tech/trailer.htm and there you will get most of the info you need.
