I replaced the worn and oil soaked dry brakes on my early 165, along with seals and disks on both sides, the actuators were replaced as well.
bit expensive! considering that the brakes are still staying on until the tractor is reversed.
both axle housings were given a thorough cleaning inside, the metal facings were washed first with petrol/gasoline then methylated spirits to get rid of any trace of oil,
the brake pedals are set operate about half way through their travel.

any suggestions?

Hi Authur With new disc and actuator The only thing I found that caused that problem was the bearing plate and axle housing being worn enough that the actuator spreader balls would roll up on to the flat area out of their grooves. I had that problem on a few Industrials never on a farm tractor. The MF super 90 had a cone type spring that went on the adjusting bolt. The little end set against the clevis and the big end set against the applying arm bracket. Installing those springs would usually help with the problem. About a half pedal of travel is where those brakes work their best. Hope this Helps

Hi Dean
Read your reply the couple of days ago, I will look for a pair of those springs or some sort of a substitute and give that a try.
with all new parts the nut on the adjusting rod is in about half of its length, so it looks like the wear inside the housings is the problem.
I will also investigate the fitting of oversized ballbearings in between the actuator plates
Many thanks for the information and all the best of luck for your new verture with your son.

Something has to be sticking so that the discs are pulling the actuator on. Did you put plenty of copper slip on the splines which the friction discs run on? If they are tight it will not help.

The correct setting for the brakes is to keep adjusting up until the wheel locks (jacked up), then back off 6 flats (1 turn).

Thanks Thomas for your prompt reply

I did use a anti seize compound on the splines but not the copper type.

the adjustment you have given is the correct one but I tried that and found after the brakes get warm the sticking problem is worse,

with the brake stuck on and the pedal released the threaded rod from the actuator and adjusting nut is forward of the lever as the lever is held back by the return spring.

maybe the distance between the facings inside the housing is excessive due to wear, could be also be a difficult one to measure

I am thinking that a spring fitted onto the actuator rod between the actuator mechanism and the back of the lever could help, any comments on this?
