i need help in identifing what engine is in this tractor:plate located on R side below back of battery box reads 444dirf or 1rf,I would assume this to be model#, then 74207p, which is likely the serial #. Also, located on the engine block, front right side, cast into block is HD260A607, below that is B3W. I am also looking for any advise on rebuilding this unknown engine. It does run, just looses oil pressure after a few minutes of operation. Thanks in advance tom

Original engines in the 444 were 260"s which had a upgrade to make them 277. In the factory they ground off the 60 in the 260 on the block and you should be able to see 277 stamped on the right-side near the front of engine near the top. Have a 44 Special myself and have found this to be fairly accurate info. Just saw a 444 Diesel in Denton,NC(looked great) and it had the 260/277 stamped. I believe I saw HD260 stamped on it but also lower-right side the 260 was stamped with the 60 ground-off and I did see 277 stamped on the upper right side.

the model number on the plate calls your tractor a 1957 mh 444, the 444 came with a gas option H277 motor and a Diesel (the D in the casting stands for Diesel) HD260 motor, The H260 is the gas the motor that came in the 44, the 44 special should have a gas H277 or a HD260 diesel motor. as far as rebuilding goes without knowing more about the tractor and just how much you want to rebuild i don"t know what to tell you....hope this helps you if you want more info just drop me an email...

For the HD260 numbers. IF they are stamped in the block just behind the water pump, then that's a HD 260, some one has replaced the engine as 444's had a HD 277 engine. Sounds like you need some engine rebuilding.

444's had the Continental HD-277 engine. I don't know why yours says HD 260. Tomorrow I'll go out to the shed and look at mine. I have a 444 diesel.
The HD260 was used in the 44 and 44 special. Sometimes the castings are the same.
