Tightening fuel tank outlet on 148 diesel

Hi,

I have just replaced the screen in the fuel tank of my 148 diesel.
When I screw the fuel tap back in to the tank it gets tight about ¾’s of a turn short of where I want the fuel outlet pipe to be (the position it was in before I started)
I am paranoid about over tightening and causing damage (bitter experience)
I assume this fitting can only go back the one way and I should be able to tighten it back to the position it was in before. Is this a correct or a dangerous assumption?

Any advice or experiences appreciated

Hi,
Yes they can be a problem when they don't stop where you want them to. I normally put a good winding of white PTFE tape around the tap thread.
Fit the tap to within about 1/2 a turn from required position and finally position.
The tap may not be completely tight but I have never had one work loose or leak in 32 years.
If you over tighten there is a danger of breaking the solder seal of the boss in the tank.
Cheers
