I've only collected John Deeres in the past and am new to other brands. However, I'm thinking about trading an unstyled JD AR for a Massey Harris 44. The 44 is running but the AR isn't. The AR is loose and it wouldn't take much to get it running. I gave $2000 for the AR. Is this a good trade or am I losing money by trading for the 44? I wasn't sure on the values of the 44s but was wanting it for a pulling tractor. I don't think anything has been done to the MH 44, just a regular stock motor and it's a rowcrop type.

Thanks again for all of the feedback. I'm going to look at it tonight.

It is amazing to me that an AR is worth $2000 when not running - maybe flabergasted would be more accurate. Of course, John Deere's of any variety bring comparitively more than anything else of similar usefulness.

A 44 would be worth $2000 if it was in good shape. In average condition, they'll bring more like $1200-1500. Prices could be higher or lower depending on location.

44's kept improving on their somewhat advanced design(when row crop or high-arch). The best 44
would be one with some regular oil changes, grease
gun attention. Take a 3/8" rachet with you, open the transmission check plug, on the right side, by
the brake pedals. If you can find gear oil near
the plug level, the steel gear set may not be pitted from 'dry decades'. The pitted teeth can snap under heavy stress, like pulling. H260 is a
great engine, 44's handle nicely. Newer had more
updates(40K series)'52-'53. While a '44RC Special'
makes top five tractors, a 44RC should manage to
stay top ten. You get more with the correct red,
but green has a major corporation raising value. It's your choice, to grab another color. Good Luck
