I"m having a heck of a job finding information on a tractor I have. The plate with the serial numbers is pretty beat up, but I can read 102 JS and 385 285. I have tried to look this up, but it seems that different sites have different ideas as to the year/type. Some say that serial number is for a 101, some don"t show it at all. I assume 102 JS stands for 102 Jr. Standard. Can anyone help me correctly identify the year of this tractor etc?

Thanks

The confusion arises with the numbers because of the exported (to Canada, etc.) tractors from Racine, Wisconsin where the tractors were made. Originally, the 101's were the gas version while the 102's were distillate fuel models. This would have been the case in both the US and in other countrys. In about 1943 or so, there were some changes made to the Junior series which included 2 panels per side, the air cleaner moved back beside the engine (from in front of the radiator) and some other differences. At this time, the export models were badged as 102's, no 101's came to Canada after this change. And those 102's leaving the USA were gas versions (even though the 102's continued using the low grade fuel in the states). They continued with the serial number sequence of 101's, even though they were called 102 (exports). So you have a 1946 Junior (J) standard non-adjustable wide front (S) and it was one of the last ones made since the last one made was serial number 385641. The 101's were replaced by the model 30 in the Massey lineup after that, in the later part of 1946. The 30's were pretty much the same tractor with some tinwork changes, no hinged or removeable side panels for example of the 30's. If you email me, I will send you a picture of my 1940 101 Junior which would look similar but different than yours. My address is mike46@icrossroads.com. Where abouts do you live?

Well that would explain things. So why then would the "46 I saw a while back be slightly different (ie/ seat and no PTO)? Did they offer different options on the same model? I am in Southren Ontario btw.

According to tractortips.com you have a 1940 model 102 Jr. standard with a 4 cylinder Continental engine. Funny thing, it lists years made as 1945-1946, but the serial number listings show other years. C. T.

Thanks. I found it unusual also that production years and serial numbers didn"t jive. Would it make a difference that it is a Canadian tractor as opposed to American? I know that there were differences in the same model for each country. I suspected that it was newer than 46, having seen a 1946 102 jr with the seat mounted on a piece of flat bar, bent. Ours has a spring under the seat with a strut for suspension. Maybe that helps narrow down the date.
