Well, i replaced my leaky pto seal yesterday.
Everything went pretty smooth, the biggest problem was trying to get the new seal back into the retainer. Anyway i go outside today and find that i still have a leak. Anyone have any suggestions? Could i have damaged the new seal somehow?

I recently did it. The flat of the seal fits into the retainer, with the lips facing forward into the tractor. I had trouble with the lips turning backwards when I out the retainer on. I stopped it from turning back with a strip from plastic ice cream container wrapped around the shaft inside of the seal, oiled up, and then the retainer installed and bolted on. Then I turned and pulled the plastic out. Worked great.

Let me guess it was one of those seals that are gray and green in color? If so good luck. Thats the only thing you can get these days. They are JUNK and nothing like the old ones.

FYI: I found that a 2" PVC "Coupler" is the perfect diameter and stiffness to squarly and evenly drive the PTO seal in using a bench vise.

Did you check that the old seal hadn't worn a groove in the shaft? If so you can sometimes recover them by putting in a lathe, skimming the surface and polishing with emery. Also try putting the seal in to a different depth so that the lip doesn't sit in the groove.

It's a MF 165 and i'm sure i put it in the right way. The only thing i can figure is that i damaged it in some way putting it back into the retainer.
