I have a 356 MF shovel loader with a GF193 Cont'
motor, it was poppping so rebuilt it, found a bad head had that rebuilt, but still popping in the carb, the timming is 1,3,4,2 correct, well it has me stumped any thoughts? need to get this thing fixed before the snow hits. I have checked the dist, valve lash, new wires, points, checked the timming by the marks and tdc piston and so forth all is right but still pops more so when it gets warmed up seems to be.

Before I did anything else I would check to be sure the wires are in the cap 1-3-4-2 in a counterclockwise rotation. wired in a clockwise rotation they will run fairly well but under a load or at a high RPM the don't run so well.

HELLO !! popping through carburetor ? bad valve job ? possible lean fuel mixture maybe carb needs cleaning ignition timing ? possible or very real possiblity of camshaft lobe worn !!
anyway just trying to help i would do a compression test #1 see where your at maybe clean the carburetor #2 and adjust #3 check valve adjustment if everything passes test maybe cam has worn lobe possibly i doubt it but have seen this problem many times before check it by removing valve cover and checking that each valve opens the same amount !! also would hurt to use a vacuum gauge to check your progress as a bouncing gauge reading will tell you of problems within anyway good luck !!!

Sounds like your talking about the chevy 283!!! I rebuilt the 283 in my 66 bel-air, one of the lobes for the #2 cylinder was completely gone. I guess it was common in that engine. sounds about like the same descriptions too.... Ran just fine w/ that spark plug wire off!!

Well just thought I would thank you all for your input on this, since the last posting I found the problem, It seems that the new caps are not the same as the old ones a different type of metal is used now, back in the day a mixture of lead and copper was used when first made, thus created a hoter responce spark, I have modifyed a cap and am thinking about painting her Candy apple Red with yellow and white flames, Thanks all and have a good time. questoin "do you think MF would get upset if I put a emblem from a old lincoln car on the front" 2facedgoat
