Weak MF35

My early 60's gas MF35 starts and runs good but it just doesn't seem to have the kind of power I think I should. Maybe I'm expecting too much. It is used primarily for shredding with a 5ft shredder. In anything but light weeds I have to run in low gear/low range and raise the shredder quite a bit to keep the RPMs up. Is this the best a MF35 can do?

Engine uses almost no oil and does not smoke. Plugs, wires, points and condenser are all new and to spec. Valves are adjusted to spec. Engine runs smooth and accelerates smoothly when not under a load. Oil bath filter is clean. Have not touched carb.

Any ideas on how I might improve the situation?

Appreciate the responses. Air filter is clear and shredder gearbox turns freely with finger tip pressure on blade. I did notice that rear deck height (the trailing wheel side) on the shredder was very low, almost touching the ground. After raising rear deck height one notch up it seems to cut better.

Thanks

If the mower is angled down at the back, it has to cut the grass at least twice, using much more power. If the back is high and the front lowered as needed, the tractor will only have to cut the stuff once, saving power.

Check your air cleaner. My 35 gas with a 5 ft bhog will cut fine in 3 low. But last spring it would not make rpms. My father in law was using it for the first mowing of the season and found what was left of a mouse nest in the oil bath of the air cleaner. It happens?? Found them setting up house in the fan shroud also. That bunch was sent a fly"n when the little 35 was turned over.

I run a 35 here in Texas mowing range land using a 5 ft. brush hog. The tractor will only bog down in 4 ft. weeds. The rest of the time any gear will do. Mainly I run in 3rd low due to the rough country. You might want to check the gear box on the hog. These can pull a tractor down if the have bearing problems. I suspect that is the case....

On a 5 foot rotary mower it should cut strongly in third gear, low range, even in heavy going.

My old Ferguson TEA20 developed a lack of power when I started tinkering with the carb to reduce fuel consumption, smelly exhaust, and other too-rich-fuel-mixture symptoms. All of the sudden with "proper" adjustment it could barely climb the hills on the property in road gear. It ran more smoothly at low speeds, though.

Be sure your air cleaner isn't so full of oil it blocks air access, and if that doesn't work, read up on carburetor adjustment.
