Seat on my Massey TO35

I have looked at all of the pictures I can find on this site. I recently picked up a 55 model TO 35 Massey Ferguson tractor. It has an unusual seat on it that has two large round rubber disks as part of the frame when looking at it from the rear of the tractor. The seat itself is a regular metal tractor seat with the usual holes in it. It flips forward to expose the entire seat mechanism which appears to be two sprung levers supporting the center of the seat section. Any idea if this seat mechanism is original or did the farmer change this out at some time in the past? I am just curious.

The seat you discribe was an option on late 1950's through early to mid- 1960's Fords. My Dad bought a new 800 series Ford in about 1958 with the optional seat. I have a 1963 Ford 4000 that has the same original seat on it as well. I would assume the seat would have been available as an accessory for Ferguson's as well. You can can find new replacements for the large rubber components on ebay.

Thanks for the reply Joe. I have not found the seat in any of the Ferguson manuals and was really confused. I like the looks of it so I will probably sand blast it and clean it up.

It sounds like what you have is a Ford Rest-O-Ride seat. These were optional on Ford tractors from the mid 50s to 1964. These seats used the round rubber torsion springs as did other designs by other manufacturers, e.g., JD, Oliver, etc.

Since your TO-35 is similar in many ways to the Fords of the era I expect that the ford seat would be easy to adapt to the MF if not a bolt on.

Thanks for the help Dean. I like the looks of the seat so I will probably clean it up and use it. Now I know where to look for any parts I might need.

Glad to help. Most parts for Rest-O Ride seats are available from NH but the torsion springs are quite expensive. I have had very good luck with rebuilt torsion springs frorm Minn-Kota repair. Some of the rebuilt torsion springs on the market are of inferior quality and will not hold up. I have had no problems in over 10 years with my 2 sets of Minn-Kota torsion springs.

I have that type of seat on my Massey Ferg 35 Can't say if it is origional or not because it has a lot of non origional welding on it. It sure looks like it could be related to an
Oliver seat. I plan to replace mine as soon as I
can find what I know is an origional MF seat,
the one with the big spring, and pan with seat cushion and padded backrest.

I have my Grandads TO35, it has the same seat on it as the MF30 industrial tractors at work about 20 years ago. It's a big pan with a seat cushion about 10" thick, it should have a back rest, but not needed in the farm mode, the whole assembly turns upside down by flipping it over backwards, no spring. Was wondering if this tractor had any optional seats! Found a MF seat that has a suspension of springs and linkage, appearently from the same era, just more comfortable, any opinions? John

Trust me ILL John, I am no expert when it comes to Ferguson tractors, but I can tell you that I have never seen a seat like you described in all of my research on seats. I would be interested in hearing what you find out.
