What is the correct engine color on a Massey Harris model 20? Is it black or red? Seems I've seen them both ways. And if it is black, is the clutch housing and transmission and driveshaft also black? Thanks for the help.

That should read MH20 (not 22).

Mike,
Being '47 vintage, the engines are black, as
would be the breather tube, cap. The Radiator
shroud will be more your choice, but the bell-
housing was/is red. The original lamps were black,
with the chrome lens clamp. The oil bath breather
body was usually black, but if black seems too
dominant on a smaller tractor, try red. The
fan would be black, if you decide on black, for
the radiator shroud. With a red shroud, either
color fan blends well. Good luck, Pal.

Thanks MY, I'll keep that info on file here. Don't know why I got into another tractor, I've got so many things to do I feel like a one-armed paper hanger. Oh well, it's only money. I'll email you a photo of it when I get one on my computer. I guess if a guy's gonna do something it might as well be MH, nothing easier or simpler to work on from my point of view. Can getting off those rear cast inner wheels be a challenge?

I think you might be right because I think I remember that in 1997 Massey had their 150th anniversary so 1947 would've been 100. I was only one yer old and am still 99 years behind.

Yes, 1947 was the 100th Anniversary, so all engines were suppose to be black. However, if you
look back, 101 Seniors had black engines in '45,
or any years. Question remains, how many red engines in 1946? Who was counting? Accurate records of detail, were apparently not kept.

A reference that I have here says that just one standard front tractor (s/n 1001) was produced in '46, that's a bit hard to believe.
