My MF 135 TURNS OVER SLOW AT TIMES. iT HAS A GOOD BATTERY. Yesterday it started fine and after I turned it off, it would turn over once and stop. kept trying and the battery cable on the starter started smoking. What do you think it could be, a weak bendix or starter drive.

Marv, Im assuming when you say it stops, the starter motor stops and shes not sitting there it turning but no engine rotation or gear teeth chattering correct????? ??which could indeed be a starter drive problem, however if not..... ...

If the battery is indeed good as you claim?? it sounds more like a bad connection or possibly a solenoid then any weak starter drive or bendix. First thing I would do is remove,,,,, ,,,clean n wire brush,,,,, ,then reattach each n every battery n starter n ground cable n connection and try her. If its not that or the battery, then I would suspect the solenoid then the starter motor itself in that order.

If its not a bad connection (often the case) and when cranking the lights would dim way down badly,,,,, ,, then I suspect its a starter problem,,,,, ,, but if they hardly dim when cranking, then I more suspect a solenoid problem.

Check battery, cables, connections, grounds then do the above n you may cure it or at least see if its more likely a bad starter or a bad solenoid. It may be possible to jump around the solenoid to eliminate it as the cause, but thats a high current and potentially bad arcing connection so be carefulllll lll.
